Middle School Parents: New Policy Explained
October 2, 2009

Middle School Parents,

For those of you who are a little confused about St. Augustin's new discipline policy, we would like to briefly explain the slips, red stamps and after-school detentions.  Whenever a Middle School student comes unprepared to class, does not turn in an assignment on time, is tardy, or is out of uniform, your child will be instructed to fill out a slip of paper corresponding to their action.  In addition, the teacher will stamp your child's assignment notebook, indicating which rule your child has broken.  For example, if your child does not have her math assignment, Mrs. Daniels will stamp in the Math space of your child's assignment notebook and check "late assignment" on the stamp.  At the same time, your child will fill out a late assignment slip and return it to Mrs. Daniels.  At the end of each day, the slips are given to your child's homeroom teacher/house mentor and put into a database.

Whenever a student has received 5 slips in the same category (5 late assignments, 5 dress code violations, etc.), your child will need to stay for detention on that Tuesday afternoon from 3:15 - 4:00.  If your child receives 10 slips, he or she will need to serve another detention and you will be contacted by Mrs. Coppola.  Once a student reaches 15 slips, he or she will serve another detention, in addition to having a mandatory meeting with the student's parents, Dr. Dowdle, and Mrs. Hogan.  After 20 slips, the student will have a Saturday School.  Finally, if your child reaches 25 slips, he or she will have to meet with the Student Assistance Team.  The number of slips will start fresh each trimester.  In order to keep track of how many slips your child has received, you can refer to his or her assignment notebook and count the number of red stamps.  This new system allows all Middle School teachers to see which actions are chronic for students, in addition to communicating these actions with parents.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new policy, please feel free to ask any Middle School teacher!
