Nutrition Café
News
Welcome back for the 2009-2010 school year! I’ve been working hard over
the summer trying to come up with ways to get the kids to eat healthier.
I wanted to share some of the fun things we have come up with for all grades.
Kindergarten through Second grade I’ll be going into the class room to
plant and learn about dark green lettuce. In approximately 45 days each
child will bring home a snack to share with you. J
Third through Fifth grade will be learning nutrition facts and will be
able to win a chance to sit at the Bistro table! They will enjoy their
lunch served on a special tray and the table will be set up “home style”
with a few extra special touches.
We have also been growing our own herbs to teach kids to associate each
herb to a certain dish: Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, Dill, Rosemary. This
should help a picky eater understand why a certain food tastes the way
it does. Providing this information may convince them to try more
dishes prepared with these flavors.
Samples will be prepared for those who wish to try new tastes. When we
prepare samples it helps us get the kids excited and they look forward
to having something new on the menu.
You will see different nutrition facts posted in the Nutrition Café each
month. Some posters promote “family time” by exercising together, taking
a walk or riding a bike with your child.
I’ll post a monthly nutrition letter for families highlighting the
importance of a good breakfast and by packing nutritious lunches from home.
Hope everyone enjoys all the information and good eats!
Sincerely,
“The Nutrition Café” lunch ladies
