What is SCRIP?
SCRIP is a national program to help non-profit groups and schools earn money. Essentially, SCRIP allows families to purchase prepaid merchandise gift cards for local and national businesses. These certificates are just like cash. In appreciation for your patronage, these businesses give St. Augustin School between 2% to 35% of the face value on the gift certificate.
How does SCRIP work?
The St. Augustin Home & School purchases gift certificates at a discount from the participating businesses, earning an automatic percentage when we sell it back to you. The difference between what the certificate is purchased for and what it is sold at is pure profit.
Can I earn tuition credit with my SCRIP purchases?
Yes. The SCRIP profits generated by you are shared with YOU in the form of a tuition credit.
How can I earn tuition credit using SCRIP?
The profit from the certificates you purchase will be split 50/50 with your family to apply towards a tuition credit on your next year’s tuition at St. Augustin School, or St. Augustin RE program, or Dowling Catholic High School. You may specify your distribution choice on the enrollment form.

How will the tuition credit program work?
Your tuition credit will be totaled once a year in the summer. This accumulated tuition credit will be applied towards your next school year tuition. Your purchases and revenue earned will be accumulated from June 1st, 2007 to June 1st, 2008. To keep bookkeeping reasonable, if your total school year tuition rebate is less than $10, the tuition credits will be donated back to the program.
How much can I earn?
That all depends on YOU! The more purchases you make using SCRIP dollars the more tuition credit you earn. By simply planning ahead, you can earn money with your everyday purchases, without spending any extra. You do not pay anymore than the face value for your gift cards or certificates and receive full value. Just plan ahead for the purchases you would make anyway, groceries, gas, clothing, gifts, a dinner out. Remember SCRIP when you are traveling and when doing any home improvement projects. Place your order in your child’s backpack and your cards are delivered right to you, or stop in the office to pick up ready available SCRIP.
Where does the other 50% go?
After deducting the SCRIP expenses, the remaining profit goes to the St. Augustin tuition assistance fund.
How do I get started?
Just fill out the attached SCRIP enrollment form designating where you would like your share of the profit to apply and how you would like your SCRIP orders returned and start shopping!
When and where can SCRIP be purchased?
In-Stock SCRIP
Many SCRIP certificates are available for immediate purchase. In-stock SCRIP is available in the school office whenever the school office is open (this includes teacher in-service days and some days of the summer). In addition, in-stock SCRIP is available at all the weekend Masses at St. Augustin’s on the 2nd Sunday of the month.
SCRIP orders
SCRIP orders may be sent to school at any time via your student and your plastic routing envelope, or dropped off in the school office, or at the SCRIP Sunday Masses. SCRIP orders will be processed weekly as follows:
In by Monday at 3:15, available Friday afternoon.
SCRIP orders received in the school office by 3:15 p.m. each Monday would be ready for pick-up or delivery Friday afternoon. If there is no school on Monday, orders are due by 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.
SCRIP will be returned in your plastic routing envelope per the method specified on the enrollment form.
Where are SCRIP forms available?
SCRIP forms are available on the St. Augustin school web page and in the school office. A new order form will be returned with every SCRIP order. Please note the profit %’s are subject to change. We try to keep the order form as up-to-date as possible, but sometimes the retailer will change the profit % after our order form has been printed.
What methods of payment are available?
Cash, check, or credit card (Mastercard or Visa) may be used. Credit cards present a special circumstance, please see next question.
How are credit card orders handled?
SCRIP does offer credit card processing for those individuals wanting the convenience, or to accumulate air miles, etc., but it is an extra expense to the SCRIP program. The SCRIP program will expense the monthly processing fee, but the individual % transaction fee charged by the bank for each credit card transaction will be taken from the tuition credit of each credit card order. This % charged varies by charge card type.
We recommend that credit card orders be at least $200 dollars, and that you wisely choose the credit card option based on the profit % given by a particular retailer. The credit card option is a viable option for large orders or for retailers giving large discounts. If only merchants giving a 3% discount (i.e. grocery stores), are selected for a credit card transaction, your tuition credit would be cancelled by the credit card transaction fee.

Can my family and friends purchase SCRIP and credit my account?
Yes. They could fill out an enrollment form and designate your family to be credited with the tuition reimbursement or purchase the SCRIP under your name. Spread the word so their everyday purchases help you!
Can SCRIP certificates be used in other cities?
Most certificates may be used nation-wide, except those certificates provided by locally owned businesses.
Do SCRIP certificates expire?
SCRIP is like cash; however, some certificates have time limitations. You may go to www.glscrip.com, select retailers, and display any specific information after selecting a particular retailer. Most restrictions are listed on the certificate.
Are there more SCRIP retailers than listed on the order form?
Yes. There are more retailers from which you may order. We choose those retailers that have stores in or around Des Moines on the order form. You may go to www.glscrip.com to see a complete list. We are able to order from any of the listed merchants. If you would like a certificate from one of these merchants add the merchant information from the website into the Other/New boxes of the order form. It will be ordered with the weekly order.
In addition, please contact the SCRIP chair if you know of a local business that may like to join our SCRIP program, or if there is a particular business you frequent and you would like us to contact as a potential SCRIP provider.
How successful is SCRIP?
Since it’s inception at St. Augustin School, over $20,000 dollars in profit has been raised. Over $2,800 was given in tuition credits last year. There is potential for so much more! Together we plan to reach much higher!
