Royals In Action - Fall Athletics

Our student community is made up of incredible young people with a diverse set of interests and talents.  St. Augustin Catholic School aims to provide a variety of academic, athletic, enrichment, and recreational programing to promote growth and development of the whole student.  Involvement in programs offered gives our students the opportunity to explore a range of activities to achieve their true potential.  Many programs of the 2018-2019 school year are underway in and outside of the classrooms.  In this Royals In Action we focus on fall athletics.  Find out what our Royals are up to with a closer look into student life and achievements and by viewing the photo gallery below.  Stay tuned for more Royals In Action articles featuring each of our programming segments.

St. Augustin Volleyball

The Lady Royals sixth, seventh, and eighth grade teams have been serving up success on and off the court! In addition to fitness, students have learned time management, balancing studies, teamwork, the value of practice, and sportsmanship.  Good luck to our student volleyball athletes as they wrap up their season at the parochial volleyball season tournament October 6th and 7th.  Most importantly, have fun!  Thank you to our parent coaches for volunteering your time and knowledge to help our young athletes grow as players and teammates.

Dowling Middle School Cross Country

Each year seventh and eighth graders have the opportunity to participate in the Dowling Middle School Cross Country program coached by Kathy Schweizer.  The program brings together student athletes from the Des Moines area parochial schools to form the team. These students have been working hard since the end of August and have had many successes.  The season opened with the girls team placing second in their division and the boys finishing in first place in their division at the Marshalltown Invitational.  St. Augustin's own seventh grader, Annie Honkamp, placed first as the overall runner for the girls.  Success continued at the Indianola meet where the eighth grade boys placed first out of fifteen teams, winning by twenty-eight points, with our eighth grader, Flynn Milligan, finishing first as the overall runner for the boys and Annie Honkamp once again taking first for the girls.  We applaud the efforts all of our students participating in Dowling's Cross Country extension program and wish everyone continued success through the conclusion of your regular season at the final meet October 9th at Southeast Polk Junior High.  The state cross country meet will be held Saturday, October 13th in Ankeny.

Dowling Catholic Riptide

Grade and middle school swimmers have the opportunity to develop their skills with the Riptide Swim Club, a program that is part of the Dowling Catholic Aquatics family of programs.  Riptide is a year round competitive swim team offering quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities.

Over this past summer, several St. Augustin students competed for Riptide and qualified for the summer State Championship swim meet in Iowa City at the end of the summer, placing in the top 3 at state!

  • State Champs! Taylor Hall and Mary Honkamp were part of the 9/10 girls 1st place 200 Medley Relay team.
  • Andrew Honkamp was the 3rd place 9/10 boys high point winner for the state meet
  • Annie Honkamp had two 2nd place finishes for 11/12 girls in the 100 breaststroke & 200 breaststroke and two 3rd place finishes for the 11/12 girls in the 50 breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley.

The fall/winter Riptide season started a few weeks ago with twelve St. Augustin students swimming on the team this season.  Participants include eighth grader Maria Eide, seventh grader Annie Honkamp, sixth grader Cate Sullivan, fifth graders Andrew Honkamp and Mary Honkamp, fourth graders Quinn Coonan and Liam Sullivan, third grader Ella Porter, and second graders Abby Cownie, Brennan Cownie, Claire Honkamp, and Stella Orr.  We look forward to spotlighting future achievements of the fall/winer Riptide Season!

Greater Des Moines Catholic Football League

The Greater Des Moines Catholic Football League is a program offered to St. Augustin students that is committed to providing a quality, organized football league for grade and middle school students. The league focuses on four key pillars of development: sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment and accountability, and football fundamentals with outstanding physical fitness.  St. Augustin has grade and middle schoolers participating in the program.  First through fifth grades play flag football while middle school teams play tackle football.  We commend our hardworking players on their season ending mid-October.

Parent Led Recreational Teams

The Des Moines Area Catholic Athletic League officially starts offering athletic programing for St. Augustin students beginning with fifth grade track and middle school sports.  Many parents with students in elementary grades seek out Des Moines and surrounding area recreational leagues for their son or daughter to participate in.  Throughout the year parent organizers may offer to coach a team and send out information for recreational league signups to classroom families.  We value the dedication our school parents have to offer their time to coach teams, teach fundamentals, and model positive sportsmanship to our youngest athletes.  In the photo gallery below we feature the third and fourth grade Soccer West team.
